My cat has Giardia. Is it safe to delay treatment for three weeks?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I have an 11 lb 2 year old cat. He has a little blood in his stool about once a month. His stool was tested yesterday and they found Giardia. A different veterinarian than the one I saw has Metronidazole capsules that I could give him instead of a bitter liquid, but I would have to wait 3 weeks to have an appt at their clinic. Is it probably okay for me to let this go untreated for 3 weeks until I can get in with the other vet? My cat doesn’t have diarrhea or any other symptoms.

Yes, you could wait however I am not sure why your current vet cannot call in a prescription to a compounding pharmacy and have the medication compounded into a flavored liquid or tasty chew tab or even a tiny tab (which is MUCH easier to administer). They can make it into many different forms as you will see on the link below. I suggest you ask your vet to do this. All they need to do is call Wedgewood Pharmacy. They pharmacy will even mail the medication directly to you. ( https://www.wedgewoodpetrx.com/items/metronidazole-tiny-tabs.html ) Hope this helps. Best wishes.
