Puppy diarrhea for 24 hours and not eating: What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | unspayed | 4 months and 22 days old | 35 lbs

Hello, My 5 month old puppy (1/2 golden, 1/4 lab, 1/4 collie) has had diarrhea/very soft stools for 24 hours now. Her last semi normal poop had small chunks of what I believe were treats. She also hasn't been eating as much as she normally does. She's in the middle of teething as well. Last night she went to sleep in the bedroom before us which is unusual. What should I do? Thank you very much!

I don't think you should do anything unless the diarrhea/soft stool persists or if she is acting sick (not eating, not drinking, extreme lethargy, etc). Twenty four hours of soft stools is not anything to be overly concerned with. I suggest you try some probiotics (one made for dogs) for a week or so. If no improvement or if she seems worse at any time then get her to your vet for an examination and fecal test.
