Cat's claw ripped off, quick exposed. How to prevent infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 13 lbs

Hello! I have no idea how it happened but one of my cat's claws was ripped clean off last night. It's one of the claws on his hind leg. He seemed really freaked out at first but has since gone back to his normal self. There was a little bit of blood, and he just has a fully exposed quick now. He isn't limping and really doesn't seem otherwise affected. It's a holiday where I live so I can't bring him to a vet. Any recommendations on how I can help him/prevent infection?

Poor Humphrey! Wash the quick with warm water and antiseptic soap. To keep him from licking at it, you can put an Ecollar on him. You can get one at a pet store or make one at home. Keep the are clean and dry, and monitor it for signs of infection. If you see redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or pus, then it is infected and he will need to see the vet for antibiotics to treat it. Best of luck.
