My cat has a bloody, smelly, oozing lump under his tail. What is it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 7 years and 4 months old | 20 lbs

my kitty was fixed atleast 5 years ago and has been an outside cat for the past year. Yesterday I noticed a ton of blood around his behind, under his tail. I saw this HORRIBLE exposed, lump about the size of a quarter, oozing puss. It’s not a normal lump tho. It is like tube-shaped, and sort of looks to be more hollow in the center, and is kind of light pink at the center. It’s splotchy red and oozing bloodand puss and smells absolutely horrible! Honestly, it looks like a little curled up shrimp

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. This is an anal gland abscess which has ruptured. I recommend taking him to the vet tomorrow where they will likely want to clean and flush the area and give him some antibiotics. It looks really scary I know, but most of that is not actually blood (it's anal gland material) and these actually tend to heal beautifully and quickly in cats. For tonight, you can apply some hydrogen peroxide or a little damp cloth to help with the oozing and the smell. Best wishes to you and Kitty!
