My puppy's diarrhea won't stop. Can I give him Pepto Bismol?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shihpoo | Male | unneutered | 9 months and 25 days old | 22 lbs

Hi! My 22lb and 9 month Shih poo puppy has diarrhea. It is just a normal brown colour but loose, the consistency of pudding. He has been on a rice mixed with his dog food diet for about 14 hours now but the diarrhea is still happening and more frequently now. Is it possible to give him pepto bismol?

It sounds like your dog has a case of colitis, or an inflammation of the colon, resulting in an increase in the volume and frequency of stools.

Colitis can be caused by many different things. Some of the more common causes include intestinal parasites, dietary indiscretion, food intolerance, irritable bowel disease, pancreatitis, a foreign body/blockage and viruses.

Because Max is so young I would recommend taking him in to your vet to be examined. They will likely want to check a stool sample and may recommend some lab work, a dietary change, and/or antibiotics.

Until then, continue feeding a bland diet like you are. As far as giving Pepto, I usually do not recommend it. It can mask the problem causing the diarrhea which could make it take longer to get Max well. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.
