My German Shepherd won't eat or drink after surgery. Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 6 months old | 66 lbs

German Shepherd, born October 2017, Caesar, refuses to eat food. Anything, including non-veg is consumed by putting in serious effort by us. Milk and curd is something he likes a bit. Caesar had undergone a Hernia surgery during 2018 May. My mom says it's after that he started showing this serious reluctance towards food. Even water consumption is low. We have taken him to the vet who said it's fine provided he is energetic and active. Do you have any suggestions for the same?

Is he maintaining a healthy weight? If his "body condition" is good (meaning he is not too bony and thin) and he has good energy and attitude, and no vomiting and diarrhea, I don't think you need to be too concerned. However, if he is losing weight, or is very thin, talk to your vet about what diet may be best to try to get weight on him. Here is how to determine body condition: https://www.thedrakecenter.com/services/pets/blog/fit-or-fat-your-pets-body-condition-score-bcs Thanks for asking PetCoach!
