Why is my older dog suddenly having large pee accidents in her cage?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | unspayed | 12 years and 7 months old | 6 lbs

I went to my cousins house for 2 hours and left Leela in her cage. When I got home she had owe all over her legs, a huge wet spot on her bed that leaked into a small puddle on her cage. My parents always let the dogs out before we go out and we've been out longer than 2 hours before with no problems. I'm worried she has something wrong with her. I get she's old hut she's not THAT old. In the photo she hasn't had contact with any liquid other than her pee

Changes in urination can be a medical problem. An infection makes them have to go more often and have accidents. This is common in female dogs. Other causes can be a seizure or incontinence. I would have her checked by your vet to test the urine to see if there are any abnormalities. From those results, they may need to do blood work to make sure she is not having kidney issues or diabetes. Once a medical reason has been rule out, then you can go down the incontinent path as there are medicines made for that.
