My dog's poop looks bloody. Is it blood or just something he ate?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Schnauzer | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 1 month old | 30 lbs

Hello! We are on vacation and my 2 year old schnauzer hadn’t pooped in about 12 hours. He just did poop and this is what it looked like (picture attached) I can decipher if it is bloody or just the color from something he ate. It’s mashed up because I was looking around in it.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. From the picture it looks as though the stool is still soft even though you mashed it up a little bit. It looks as though there is some blood present in the stool. This could be due to something that Posey ingested leading to a dietary indiscretion with some inflammation in the colon leading to the blood showing up in the stool. If Posey is otherwise normal, eating and drinking normal amounts then I would initiate a bland diet of chicken and rice and feed this at least 3 to 5 days passed the resolution of the abnormal stool. If the abnormal stool continues or worsens that I would try and get him seen by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate Diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps! Please feel free to contact me with any other questions or concerns that you may have. abnormal stool. If the animals dual continues or worse than that I would try and get him team by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps! Please feel free to contact me with any other questions or concerned that you may have.
