My dog is shaking, lethargic, no appetite, and stomach pain. Serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 1 year and 6 months old | 30 lbs

What is wrong with my dog? She has been shaking/trembling on and off for two days accompanied by extreme lethargy, loss of appetite, and occasional panting. She hadn’t pooped for at least 24 hours but was finally able to this morning after eating pumpkin (as recommended by vet). She still strains to poop and now has abdominal pain - she winces when her stomach is touched. She is drinking and urinating normally. Is this serious and should I take her to the vet or will it pass?

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. If Xena is still suffering from extreme lethargy and abdominal pain, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine her sooner rather than later. If she ate something such as a toy or other foreign object it could be causing a foreign body obstruction in her intestinal tract. This can become quite serious if not addressed and even fatal. I would recommend having abdominal x-rays taken to see whether or not she has anything abnormal in her abdomen. I would also recommend having her blood tested to see if there are any abnormalities as well. If she has been vomiting and lethargic she may also be dehydrated and may need fluids to help hydrate her and your vet can provide that treatment. I hope this helps and I hope that Xena improves quickly. Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
