Dog losing hair around eyes/muzzle, no itch or irritation. Is it allergies?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 6 months and 15 days old | 35 lbs

My dog is losing hair around her eyes and muzzle. The spots are not red or irritated. There is no eye or nose discharge. She isn’t itching either. Could it just be allergies?

It could be allergies but it could also be demodic mange (skin mites), i would recommend having it checked by your vet, these mites can easily be seen under the microscope and treatment is also very straight forward and simple.

Many dogs are born with demodex mites in their skin, but do not show it due to a well functioning immune system which keeps the mites in check. Hairloss around the eyes and snout is typical for demodicosis, which can break out when the dog's immune system is compromised, so it may be that your dog is suffering from this. Demodicosis can be diagnosed via a clinical exam and a skin scraping examined under the microscope. If the diagnosis is indeed demodicosis, your vet will want to find the underlying cause that compromised the immune system and will want to do blood tests. She may also be suffering from and endocrine condition, which can be diagnosed with a blood test. I suggest you make an appointment with your veterinarian.
