My dog is vomiting, not eating, and has diarrhea. Is it a blockage?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 107 lbs

My dog started vomiting and didn't eat yesterday (very abnormal). I took him to the vet and they did an x-ray saying that he had a lot of gas and was backed up. They couldn't confirm whether it was a blockage or not and rescheduled an appointment for tomorrow to check his vitals. Just recently he started secreting diarrhea from his anus while laying down or walking. I know his appointment is tomorrow but I'm desperate for at least some information about what could possibly be going on with him!

If the vomiting and inappetance has continued then I would be very concerned about the possibility of an intestinal obstruction. If he is eating and holding it down then hopefully he just has a lot of inflammation in his gastrointestinal tract. If this is the case then a week or so of a bland diet and possibly some probiotics may be helpful. If he seems more sick tonight then I would encourage you to have him evaluated by an emergency veterinarian immediately. Best of luck and I hope he improves soon. Thank you for using Pet Coach.
