My cat vomited, now breathing heavy and whimpering. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 4 years and 1 month old

My cat was fine and then out of nowhere she started vomiting. It was just saliva. Nothing major. But then right after she started heaving again and let out a loud meow and has been breathing heavy or rapidly? I guess panting. And shes whimpering slightly. Almost like an attempt to purr. This has never happened. Her breathing is calmed down a little. Its still weird. Got her laying down now and shes purring but I’m still pretty worried since the breathing is still odd.

Hopefully, by the time you read this answer, all the symptoms resolved and Leia clear her throat and now she is back to normal but breathing problems are always a great concerns in cat, it can be caused by a respiratory or cardiac problem. If Leia continues to breath in a odd manner (fast shallow breathing, increased movement of the chest, abdominal breathing) please seek veterinarian attention asap, it might be an emergency. Please post again on the forum if you would like to discuss it further. I hope my answer was helpful.
