My dog's eye is red and swollen. Is Benadryl enough or serious?

Dogs eye is red and swollen. Giving him benedryl. Is this more than an allergy?

This looks like conjunctivitis. The benadryl should reduce the itching but I recommend a veterinary exam to check for a corneal ulcer and get eye medication to reduce the swelling and prevent infection. I always recommend an exam and treatment with eye problems since they can sometimes cause permanent vision problems.
