Why is my dog vomiting dark brown liquid, congested, and lethargic?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed | 5 years and 6 months old | 21 lbs

My otherwise normally healthy dog (Eats Blue Buffalo Dog Food w/ wet food in morning & takes daily vitamin treats) has been sounding congested the past couple of days. She also just recently vommitted a large amount of dark brown creamy liquid w/ bit’s of whole dog food pieces in it. It didn’t necessarily have an odor but when cleaning it up it almost had a metallish smell. She’s been a little less active than normal today.

It sounds as Alie is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking her to the vet the first chance you get, she will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection she will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better. if the vet thinks it is more serious she will need a blood test and possibly an ultrasound in order to find out what is wrong.
