My dog's spay incision is warm and she's scratching. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pekingese | Female | spayed | 1 year and 2 months old | 5 lbs

Hi my dog just got speyed 4 days ago and I’m concerned because she won’t even let me touch her wound and although she can’t lick it because she can’t reach it she’s been scratching above the area. Her belly is very warm to touch. Am I just overreacting?

Do not touch her wound. It looks a bit swollen, and if the skin around it happens to turn red and more swollen, I would take Ruby back to the vet next week for a recheck, As long as she cannot reach the incision and lick it or scratch it, she should be ok. Do not remove her e-collar as she will immediately get busy with the incision which can cause an infection.
