My senior dog is limping and incontinent. Is it time for euthanasia?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 88 lbs

My very elderly Great Pyrenees has been limping, has difficulty getting up and frequently is incontinent of formed stool. I've tried glucosamine/ chrondroitin, tabs without improvement. I don't want to be cruel by not 'putting her down' but I don't want to be hasty. This has gone on for quite a while (years).

I’m sorry you are having to make this tough choice. I always counsel owners that if they feel like their dog’s quality of life is poor, then euthanasia should be considered. It sounds like Gypsy is uncomfortable and in pain and euthanasia may be the best choice for her. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.
