My puppy won't hold bladder outside crate. How do I teach it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Female | unspayed | 3 months and 19 days old | 3 lbs

Random question but, you know how puppies can hold their bladder for the number of months they are plus one hour, how do you get them to actually learn to hold it? Like if she’s in her crate, she’ll hold it but if she were just out in the house, she’d pee whenever. I want her to learn to hold it if I were out for say three hours, but I don’t want to put her in the crate for that long. Thank you

Thank you for submitting your question! You are correct in that puppies can typically go as many hours as they are in months plus one. However, until a puppy reaches 16-20 weeks of age, they do not have full control over their urination and defecation. Up until this point, you are merely trying to create consistent routines and praise desired behavior (ie going potty outside). Once they have reached the age of physical maturity and can control their eliminations potty training is achieved quickly.
