My dog threw up after phenobarbital. Should I redose the medication?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Female | 14 years and 2 months old | 18 lbs

I gave my dog her phenobarbital pill in one of those pill pocket treats 1 hour and 20 minutes ago. Now she has just threw up. There is no evidence of the pill treat in her vomit, just dog food that she has eaten since taking the pill 1 hour and 20 minutes ago. Do you think she threw up the phenobarbital?

While it's possible that there was some pill remaining, enough time had passed that most of the pill was probably digested. If you didn't see any of the pill or the treat in her vomit I would not recommend redosing.
