My cat has eye infection, nose lesion, and congestion. Is it FHV?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 2 months and 25 days old | 3 lbs

Bones recently started exhibiting signs of an eye infection which I have been treating with terramycin and the inflammation has gone down but now he has developed a lesion on his nose and seems slightly congested. I’m worried it’s FHV because he hung around my cat who had it last year. Could she still be a carrier? If not, any ideas as to what this is? At first I thought maybe he ran into the bar of his playpen but I’m not so sure now that I’ve had a closer look. Appetite is also down.

While the eye changes could be secondary to an upper respiratory infection caused by feline herpesvirus, nasal lesions are not typically seen. It is possible that this is a small wound or something like an eosinophilic granuloma. It's possible that your other cat is a carrier and was having a subclinical outbreak that transferred the virus, or it's possible that Bones was exposed as a very young kitten and wasn't showing symptoms until now. I would recommend having him examined by a veterinarian to see if medications are needed (and to rule out something like a corneal ulcer causing the eye changes).
