Why is my dog having bloody stools and thirst after spleen surgery?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Male | neutered

I have a boxer dog, who has recently (2 weeks ago) had this spleen removed. He has been doing great in his recovery and the vets on happy with him. However we have started to notice blood in his stools, some of it is very dark so I am guessing old blood that’s been left over in him however today there was fresh blood coating his stool. He is back to being constantly thirsty, as he was before the op and now having runny stools

Bright red blood usually indicates an issue lower in the GI tract, while dark or tarry stools can indicate bleeding from in the stomach or higher up in the GI tract. I would let your vet know about the change in symptoms, especially if they are new, sudden, or old ones have suddenly returned. Your vet may recommend bringing Buster back into the vet for additional testing and checkup to make sure the surgery and other treatments are going OK, and may also recommend changing or adding medications as needed.
