My dog has diarrhea, won't eat, and is lethargic. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My chihuahua mix had diarrhea last night. She is drinking water today, but doesn't want to eat. She is lying very still and quiet. Occasionally she belches . What should I do?

I can give you a home remedy for her to see if it helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she refuses to eat the bland diet, she starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Best of luck.

He might have eaten something spoiled that is causing this. withhold food for 12 hours then offer Little little boiled boneless chicken and rice every 6 hours in small portions. if he is eating and not vomiting, continue with this diet for 2 days. After 2 days, you can put him back gradually on his normal food. If he continues vomiting or is not eating, take him to the vet to get treatment.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Alice. I'm glad she is still acting like herself, but she does have GI upset. If her symptoms continue, she will need to see her veterinarian for a diagnosis and treatment plan. Depending on the size of the dog, it is generally safe to withhold food for 12-24 hours to rest the GI tract. Be sure to provide water during this time so she does not become dehydrated. Then slowly introduce her normal diet. If this does not resolve her issues or she starts acting sick, she will need to see her veterinarian. I hope this information helps!
