How to treat dry, scaly skin and scabs on my 2-week-old puppy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 17 days old

My 2wk old pup has dry, scaly scab-like skin across it's back but still has fur while it's siblings only has small spots affected. The scabs are more attached to the fur than to the pup's skin. All pups are eating healthy from their mom, not vomitting, no diarrhea, and sleeps well. How can i treat them? I don't exactly trust our local vet that much.

I am glad to hear that they are otherwise doing well. That is unusual. Is there any chance they have fleas? I would recommend you try a gentle dog shampoo, and then use some coconut oil and a flea comb to get these scabs off. If that isn't clearing things up after a few days, get them in to your vet, and if any other symptoms start, please get them to your vet sooner. Thank you for asking Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
