My dog's poop looks strange. Is it worms or did he eat something?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 3 years and 8 months old | 40 lbs

I noticed something strange in my dogs stool, don't know if he ate something or if this is a parasite. Sorry for the gross poop pictures. Just worried. He isn't showing any signs related with having worms but wanted to see what you think.

It's obviously hard to know for sure without being able to examine the stool but from the photos, that almost looks like cloth from a toy or something? I can't say for certain though that it's not a type of worm. If Buddy is in the habit of eating toys or other inedible objects, you should prevent this as they can cause an intestinal blockage (which may require surgery). If you still have the stool, you may drop it by your vets office to confirm what the origin is. You may also consider erring on the side of caution and have his stool checked for worms just to be safe. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

It is hard to determine from the picture if this is a parasite that your dog pooped out or if it is just something abnormal that he ate. If he is acting normal and eating well and otherwise having normal stools I wouldn’t worry about it too much. If you feel like he is not eating like normal or he is having runny or loose stools you may want to consider taking a fecal sample to your vet to be checked for intestinal parasites. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.
