My red eared slider turtle won't lay eggs. How to prevent egg binding?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Reptile | Aquatic Turtle | Female

My female red eared slider turtle was acting restless and wouldn't stop basking on her platform. My fear was that she's gravid, so I made her a nest box out of a large bin and soil. So far she has not made any motion to lay eggs, and I don't know how much longer to leave her in the box. How long before she becomes eggbound? There are no exotic vets near me that will see a turtle and I really don't know what else to do.

Make sure the box is large enough for her and the soil is deep enough and warm enough. Monitor her for lethargy, swelling around her vent or straining. These are symptoms of potential egg binding. You can find DIY instructions online for an appropriate lay box for confirmation. You can also have her x-rayed by your regular veterinarian. If she is gravid (with eggs), it should be apparent on x-ray.
