Why does my neutered cat keep marking rugs near our male dog?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Aegean | Male | neutered | 7 months and 22 days old | 15 lbs

I have a cat who is marking on our rugs and basically everywhere our male dog lays. He’s been fixed but he still marks on our rugs after we clean them. We don’t know what to do to stop his marking and I’m afraid we’ll have to get rid of him if he doesn’t change. What can we do? He’s also about 8 1/2 months old.

While a behavioral cause is possible, it’s important to rule out a medical condition such as a urinary tract infection or crystals in the urine which can cause pain and house soiling. I recommend to have JB examined and his urine checked by his veterinarian to look for abnormalities. The vet also may recommend a medication if it appears to be behavioral. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

JB is adorable but inappropriate urination can be frustrating. I cannot access the other question and answer but with a cat that even though he uses the litter box when they have inappropriate urination there could be a few different things going on. He may have something simple as a urinary tract infection. He may have bladder stones or it can even be behavioral. I would recommend a urine sample to check for a urinary tract infection. If there is no infection then I would recommend a urine culture, radiographs and blood work. While there is a lot of work up in this finding the problem is important. If everything is clear then I would recommend behavior medication. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
