My dog had diarrhea and vomiting but is acting normal. Vet needed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 2 years and 7 months old | 44 lbs

My dog had terribly smelly gas last week, then on Thursday ha very loose stools. On Friday she wouln't eat and by Saturday her stools were pure liquid, and vile smelling. Tonight for the first time she was waiting for her food, and ate it all, but 2 1/2 hours later vomited it up again. Her gums are pink, her eyes are nice and shiny, and she is playing with the other dogs, swimming, and otherwise acting normally. Her stools are back to normal today. Do I need a vet?

Diarrhea and vomiting could be caused by toxin ingestion, parasites, change in diet, infectious viral diseases such as parvovirus, blockage in the gastrointestinal tract caused by ingestion of a foreign body, or a mass/growth in the gastrointestinal tract. I recommend you make an appointment to have Pepper seen by a veterinarian as soon as you can, as vomiting and diarrhea can lead to dehydration and can be very dangerous if left untreated. I recommend you take in a fecal sample from Pepper when you go, as your vet will likely want to test the sample to see if there are any parasites Pepper may be dealing with so that they can be treated for accordingly.
