Why is my budgie losing feathers every day, not just molting?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Parakeet | Male | unneutered | 8 months and 6 days old

Hi I have been watching and researching about budgies a lot and many people say that budgies should not drop any feathers at all unless they are moulting? But every morning I find at least four white little feather balls on the bottom of his cage. He preens regularly and eats pellets and seeds and fruit and veg and had regular baths. I take him out all day since I'm home schooled and he is very bonded to me. Droppings are normal.

Thanks for reaching out about Quiz and including a photo. Feather molting can also be due to stress or disease. Your diet and husbandry appear very good. Maybe provide a little more vegetable protein (beans, legumes), for feather growth. Diseases such as polyoma or PBFD are possible and if feather loss continues, should be tested for. If continued to be concerned, a veterinary visit is recommended. Good luck.
