My cat has cancer and won't eat. What appetite meds can help?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Scottish Fold | Female | spayed | 4.5 lbs

A month ago, my 13-year-old cat Sadie was diagnosed with inoperable lymphatic cancer. Because she isn't eating well, her vet gave her a steroid shot to stimulate her appetite. She shows an interest in food but still is not eating very well, yet, she has some energy and seems to have good days and not-so-good days. Can you offer a specific appetite stimulant or medication I can mention to her vet?

Mirtazapine is often used to stimulate appetite in cats and it now comes in a transdermal formulation that can be spread on the ear. The corticosteroid injection can have direct anti-cancer activity as well and it’s possible that Sadie could have another.
