Why is my cat losing weight, not eating, and just lying around?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed

Hi my cat Phoebe has been losing weight, barely eats, and just lays on the floor. She is really worrying me and I can’t afford to go to the vet.

Poor Phoebe! It definitely sounds like something is wrong. Weight loss, lethargy, and not eating are all very vague symptoms that could be caused by almost any type of illness, so it's hard to say what might be wrong without being able to examine her and run some tests. Some possible causes would include a systemic illness like liver or kidney disease, some type of infection, a GI problem like chronic pancreatitis or an intestinal obstruction, or even some type of cancer. I'm afraid there's no way around taking her to the vet, since she will need some diagnostic testing to find out what's causing her symptoms. This is not something that can be treated at home. If cost is a concern, you could see if there is a low-cost SPCA clinic in your area that could help, or apply online for Care Credit, which is a payment plan accepted by most vet clinics: www.carecredit.com
