Why is my cat throwing up but acting normal? Vet says he's fine.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Male | neutered | 5 years and 6 months old | 22 lbs

My cat has been throwing up food for 3 1/2 days. He acts completely normal, jumps on and off the cat tower,he still wants to eat and drink water. He does pee and poop normally. But I don't get why he throws up. I took him to the vet and they said he was doing good and prescribed meds. But another vet said something about doing an ultrasound then possibility of a four thousand dollar surgery. That sounds kinda unnecessary to me because he seems fine otherwise. Now he hasn't thrown up since?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Neptune. I typically start by collecting blood and urine samples in vomiting cats. I will include testing for pancreatitis on the blood panel. If the cat is painful in the belly, then I will take x-rays of the abdomen. Many times, this will give a diagnosis for the cause of the vomiting. If these samples are normal, then I will treat with anti-nausea medications. If this does not help, then I will discuss a diet trial, more advanced blood panels and then an abdominal ultrasound. I hope this information helps!
