Dog has painful, moist wound near anus: What's wrong and what to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boston Terrier | Female | spayed | 14 lbs

Mila has a painful cut or scrape with white or yellow in the middle right next to her anus. The wound It’s moist, but not bleeding. She doesn’t want anyone to touch the area. She is eating and going to the bathroom normally. She’s not her normal self, but doesn’t act sick. What could this be? I’m planning on taking her to the vet tomorrow but what could it be? What should I do in the mean time?

Hello, sorry to hear about Mila. Its likely that this is an impacted anal gland that developed an abscess that then, subsequently ruptured. However a wound from trauma (being bit by something, or hit by something) may have also caused this wound. Make sure that she is not licking at it now and have her seen by her veterinarian tomorrow for her appointment. She may need to have medications such as antibiotics administered to her. Hope this helps and best of luck.
