My vaccinated dog was exposed to distemper. Is the vaccine effective?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 21 lbs

A dog I fostered got all vaccinations on 3/16/19 I have 4 dogs of my own that are all vaccinated. They were in separate spaces but I let the foster run in my back yard when my dogs were inside. She peed and drank from their bowl. Foster started coughing, vomiting white foam and got nasal mucus. Vet thinks it is kennel cough but didnt rule out distemper. I am worried for my dogs. How effective is the distemper vaccine? The foster had been vaccinated for distemper a month before going to my house.

Hi there. In general, the vaccine for distemper is very effective - so it would be surprising for the foster dog to develop it a month after being vaccinated, and even more unlikely for your healthy, vaccinated dogs to catch it from her on the off-chance that it *is* distemper. Kennel cough would be much more likely. So try not to worry too much, for now! I would definitely change and clean the water bowl, and keep the foster separated from your own dogs until she's back to normal. And monitor your pups for any symptoms, so they can get started on treatment if needed.
