My new puppy is sick, lethargic, and won't eat. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 21 days old | 5 lbs

I got a rescue puppy at 7 weeks old two days ago. When I brought her home she was doing fine, playful, alert. We started her on a brand new food because we don’t know what she was eating before. On day two, yesterday, she vomited three times and had a bit of diarrhea. It’s day 3 and now she’s not eating and is pretty lethargic (but still alert). What can I do for her? The most she has eaten is milk. I tried chicken and rice but she wouldn’t take it.

A sudden change in diet can lead to these GI symptoms, but so can an illness. It's quite serious that she's now not eating, is lethargic, and won't eat the bland diet. I think she is sick enough to require a vet visit immediately. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website.
