Why is my new kitten's poop loose and yellowish after changing food?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 5 months and 12 days old

I recently got a 5 month old cat and this is my second day and she is pooping irregularly. I was petting her and she pooped a little bit out and it was lose and a little yellow, still mostly brown though. I dont know what kind of food they gave her at the selter but ive feed her Rachael Ray Nutrish.

A sudden change in diet can lead to GI upset in the form of diarrhea, which Abby may have. I can give you a home remedy for her to see if that helps. Withhold food for 6 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Best of luck.
