My horse has injured his hock by slipping in the mud. Currently, he does not seem lame however I have not performed a lameness test (it has only been 2 days since he slipped). He is mildly swollen in his hock and it appears to be bog spavin. When would be the time to call the vet? Is a vet immediately necessary or should I only call one if he turns up lame?

I'd keep an eye on Bud for now. Most bog spavin heals without treatment, and horses only become lame if the condition is caused by stress. If it's caused by an accident, the bog spavin resolves as soon as the joint heals. If the joint stays inflamed and the swelling is hard and tense, or he does become lame, then yes I would call the vet to come and see him. Rest him for now to allow him to heal. I hope this helps!
