My dog ate something bad and is vomiting. When should I call the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund (Wire Haired) | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 6 months old

My standard wire haired dacshound managed to find a piece of meat in a hedge coated in a sticky sauce and managed to eat a lot of it before I noticed. This happened yesterday and today, she is bringing up her food. She seems fine in herself - do I need to do anything? Thanks.

If she has only vomited a few times you may not need to do anything specific. If she doesn't have any food sensitivities or underlying medical conditions I often recommend feeding a bland diet such as boiled chicken breast and plain white rice. If she is vomiting continuously, if the vomiting does not resolve in 24 hours, if her appetite is decreased or if she develops diarrhea I'd recommend seeing your vet.
