Puppy has congestion, yellow boogers, milk from nose. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 1.5 lbs

I have a litter of 2 week old abandoned puppies. Theres 4, the runt was having trouble with the pet bottles because it was making milk come out his nose so we switched to a slow flow baby bottle and that worked but now hes having a lot of congestion and yellow boogers from his nose. He eats fine, crawls around, makes puppy noises, and interacts with his sisters. Loves to be held (is quite spoiled). No cleft palete. Im just worried that something might be wrong. Is this normal?

No this is not normal - the nasal dishcarge is commonly seen in pups which have aspirated milk and caused infection. In some cases a cleft or other birth defect can be very far back in the throat and may not be immediately visible without sedation and lights being shone in the back of the throat. It sounds like he will require antibiotics and possibly medication to break up the mucus - a full vet check is recommended urgently; they may also recommend weaning onto semi solid food which may be easier to swallow for him
