My cat pees outside the box, smells, licks, and has skin issues. Help!

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed

I have a cat that is just over 2 years old, and she has always been well-behaved and used her litter box normally, however over the last few weeks she’s been using it a lot more, and making a mess around the box, and has even peed outside of it 2-3 times. She also stinks of pee, and licks her genitals excessively. And more recently, I have noticed there are dry spots/scans near her neck and back region. I’m not in a position to go to the vet right now so I’d appreciate some help. Thanks!

The symptoms you’re describing are very suspicious for a urinary tract infection or perhaps another bladder abnormality causing increased urination and pain when she urinates such as crystals in the bladder. Unfortunately there’s not anything you can do at home to treat an infection or crystals without the assistance of a veterinarian. I recommend to go online to look for low-cost programs in your area. There are also companies such as care credit or scratch pay who offer financing options to clients. Skye needs to have her urine examined for abnormalities to know how to proceed and help her the best. Best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.
