My dog threw up and is quiet. Should I feed her or go to the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 12 years and 11 months old | 74 lbs

My dog and I were walking in a field. She was digging in the dirt (?smelling moles maybe). Then she stopped and threw up 4 times with a bunch of slobber, no food. This was exactly 1 hour ago. She also threw up liquid 3 times earlier today but was entergetic and happy earlier today. So an hour ago we came home, she drank some water and is now lying still on her bed, not dry heaving. Should I cook rice, chicken, pumpkin or not feed anything and take her to vet?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. In general, if Bella is mostly herself attitude and energy wise, it can likely wait until morning. I would offer her water in another 2-3 hours. I would NOT feed her anything for at least 8 hours. At that time, a small amount (1/2 cup) of the mix you describe is great. Make sure she keeps that down for an hour or two before offering another small amount. If at any time Bella: -continues vomiting - has pale gums - becomes excessively lethargic - stands and pants or dry heave and seems uncomfortable - has a belly that looks bloated or feels firm -collapses - has ANY other signs that worry you It’s time I head to the emergency vet IMMEDIATELY. Best wishes to you and Bella.
