My senior dog with a tumor won't eat. How can I stimulate appetite?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | English Springer Spaniel | Male | unneutered | 11 years and 8 months old

Hi, My dog is 11 years old, very healthy and active however the vet recently found a tumour on his bladder area. He goes through stages of eating and then not eating but for the past few days he has no interest in food yet he is full of energy when he gets to the beach and runs constantly enjoying himself. We know that we’re going to have to make that decision soon but we just want to know is there any way of helping him eat in the mean time?

I would speak with your veterinarian about appetite stimulants such as Mirtazapine and Entyce. Both of these drugs can increase the appetite but need prescriptions. I would also look into home cooked meals and see if this entices his appetite further. You can check out www.balanceit.com for homemade diet instructions. I hope this helps and that Jasper feels better soon. Please let me know if you have any further questions / concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
