My dog is constipated and pooping less. What can I do to help?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pembroke Welsh Corgi | Female | spayed | 3 months old | 25 lbs

I’m worried. I took mia to the vet and told her about the grunting Mia does when she poops. Vet told me to try canned pumpkin to loosen up her stool a little bit. She also said change her diet but there’s no telling what her food allergy is, if any. My vet did not help much and Mia is pooping a lot less than she normally does. Anyone have any suggestions/advice? :(

Unless you know that Mia has a food allergy to something in the diet, go ahead and try a food that is higher in fiber. You can find the information for the fiber content on the side of the bag. Watch her closely for the first month for any signs of vomiting, diarrhea or itchy skin. If nothing is seen then she is not likely allergic to anything in that diet. Pumpkin does help some dogs but not others. Also try to increase her water intake as this can contribute to constipation as well. Best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.
