My cat is straining in the litter box and can't poop. What's wrong?

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 3 years and 10 months old | 12 lbs

Need help asap. 5 year old male neutered domestic short haired yowling loudly in obvious distress, Straining to go in litter box, but unable to pass stools. We have 3 cats that all have open access to food and water. Only watery mucus surrounding very red inflamed anal opening. Not sure what to do for him. Please help.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. If Sylvester is in that much distress, I would get him in to be seen by a veterinarian sooner rather than later. What you are describing could be an indication of a fecal impaction, megacolon or something causing an obstruction. If he is not producing any urine either, he may be dealing with a urinary tract obstruction, which can be very serious if left untreated. I would get him seen as soon as possible if you can so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction.
