My dog is slow and not eating after a rawhide. Is he obstructed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Male | neutered | 14 lbs

my 13 lb 4 yr old Pom/Pekinese mix looks visibly slower after my wife gave him a rawhide chew (2nd day in a row). Last night he would not eat or drink water. This morning still has not eaten his food or taken water. My wife thinks it's the rawhifde 2 days in a row. I think maybe he ate something else. What are your thoughts?

It could definitely be the rawhide. They are very hard to digest and can cause an obstruction, especially in such a small dog. We try to discourage these as treats because of this. If your pup is still not feeling well he should see a vet for evaluation. Bloodwork and xrays are likely to be recommended. The most important thing to rule out is obstruction. Hopefully it is just mild gi upset instead and your vet can prescribe some meds. I hope this helps and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
