My 3-month puppy bites herself bloody. Is it allergies or skin problems?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 27 days old | 3 lbs

My 3 month old puppy is constantly biting at herself to the point where she draws blood and creates a sore. This has happened on 3 separate occasions. Could this be allergies?

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Itchiness in dogs can be caused by allergies, such as to fleas, food or environmental allergens. Other causes of itchiness include bacterial infections in the skin, mites such as demodex, and/or fungal infections. Please ensure that Una is on a consistent flea and tick preventative medication that was prescribed by your veterinarian. Flea medications that can be purchased from a food or pet store or online are not safe or effective in dogs. If Una is already on an appropriate flea medication year round, I recommend having her examined by your regular veterinarian for an exam and skin scrape to evaluate for the presence of an infection and/or mites. Food and environmental allergies are very uncommon in young puppies. I hope this is helpful!
