Can my child bring parvo home to our new puppy from preschool?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My child attends an in home preschool but is on spring break. Last week the preschool owner got a puppy, which subsequently contracted parvo and died within a few days of coming home. we are planning to bring a new puppy home in about 7 weeks. Is there any chance of my son bringing the virus back to my home and our puppy being infected? The preschool home is very clean and she is disinfecting but the children play inside and out. I'm nervous!

Hello, and thanks for your question on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Parvovirus can remain in the environment for years, so I would absolutely not bring your new puppy over to the preschool location until she's had her full puppy series of the Parvo vaccine - but the risk of your son bringing the virus back home for your puppy to be exposed to a few months later is very very very small. If he ever came home with known puppy fecal matter on his shoes then I'd replace them, but otherwise my level of concern isn't too high. Make sure your new puppy is fully vaccinated on time, and it will likely do great. Hope this helps, and enjoy your new puppy!
