My cat has a bald spot with pus on his head. Is it an infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Japanese Bobtail | Male | unneutered | 1 year old | 19 lbs

Ive recently been seeing some issues with bobtail cat (male) i woke up one morning with him in my room, there was nothing unusual about him. About an hour later, he had a huge bald spot on his head, it looked like there was an incision in the middle, and now it looks like theres puss coming out of it. Is this something for a vet to handle? And what is it? Im thinking its an infection.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I think the most likely scenario is an abscess (a deep infection, usually caused by a cat bite). Yes it does require vet attention. The area will need to be lanced, drained, and flushed. Then he will need an antibiotic to help with the infection. Best wishes to you and Soup!
