My dog is bleeding like she’s starting heat cycle. But she was in heat last month. She looks sad and I’m getting worried. She’ll be 8yrs on May 23rd.

Hello, and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It is possible for dogs to have a split heat, or two heat cycles very close together. However, the timing makes me concerned for the possibility of a pyometra, or an infection of the uterus. This typically occurs several weeks to a month after a heat cycle, and is a life threatening condition that requires prompt vet care. Given the seriousness of the pyometra possibility, I recommend you have Luna seen by a vet as soon as possible. Hope this helps and all the best to you and Luna!

Hello. This is definitely not normal. Princess may have a uterine infection which is causing a bloody discharge or she may have cysts in her ovaries which can cause her to repeatedly cycle. The concern with that is that her cervix will remain open for longer periods of time and make it much more likely that she will develop a uterine infection. These infections can be very serious. Princess should see a veterinarian to determine what is going on. These issues are much more common in older unspayed female dogs. It may be a situation where spaying her would be necessary but that is something you and your veterinarian can decide on based on her overall health and if the surgery is needed.
