My dog won't eat, losing weight, hair loss, loose stool. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 7 years and 5 months old

My dog used to eat a lot (like very hungry) but isn’t gaining much weight. He lost hair to what seemed to look like mange but he stopped itching on them but now he doesn’t want to eat or drink. Always has the urge to poo but a drop like loose poop comes out and nothing more. What could be wrong?

Poor Oreo! The problem with diseases is that many diseases look the same clinically, just like in humans. Weight-loss is concerning for kidney disease, diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, liver disease, poor nutrition, heavy parasite infestation or cancer. Diarrhea can be seen with all of the above list of conditions and pets will often develop a poor hair coat with all of the above list of conditions. Oreo needs to see his veterinarian for physical exam and blood work to start figuring out what is wrong. The doctor may find out right away what the problem is or they may need to move on to other diagnostics. Until you know the cause, you cannot treat correctly. Best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.
