My dog ate chapstick. Is it toxic? What symptoms should I watch for?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Norwich Terrier | Male | neutered | 18 lbs

So I left my room for 2 seconds and came back to find a dismembered tube of chapstick whose end had been chewed through by my Norwich Terrier (around 18 lbs). I immediately went online to find whether this could be toxic, but am still unsure. It seems as though he may have chewed off the cap along with some of the tube, although there were uningested, plastic pieces laying around. The tube was fairly close to filled to where it had been before, I believe he may have been licking it, not eating.

Check the packaging to make sure it doesn't contain xylitol. If there is xylitol in it, take Kona into a vet immediately. Otherwise, licking it shouldn't cause a problem if there is no xylitol, but the plastic may cause some issues if he swallowed any pieces. You could see vomiting, diarrhea, blood in the feces, lethargy, or anorexia. If you see any of those signs, take him into a vet right away. Hopefully, though, he will be just fine. I hope this helps!
