My dog won't eat, is lethargic, and has mucus in his stool. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | unneutered | 10 months and 25 days old | 54 lbs

Last night while Hudsen our 11 month Labrador won’t eat at all this morning. Last night he had his normal dry food, ice cubes and sliced apples as a snack (no seeds or stems). He usually is a wild, excited and hyper puppy; today he’s extremely lame, will play mildly but will only lay down and looks ill. His poop this morning is NOT normal it had a severe excessive amount of thick mucus all through it. A month ago he had a health check up and was 100% healthy.

Poor Hudson sounds like he may be sick. I'd try feeding him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts. If this helps, slowly add back in his normal diet after a couple of days on the bland diet. Should he refuse to eat the bland diet, vomits the bland diet, his poop continues to have mucous in it, he develops diarrhea, or becomes very lethargic, take him into a vet immediately. Best of luck.
